We seek an enthusiastic Executive Director committed to serving as an ambassador for citizen diplomacy in our community. The Executive Director should be committed to professional exchange programs as a critical means to fostering international cooperation, promoting mutual understanding across national borders, facilitating the creation of worldwide professional networks, and contributing to the global cultural education of area students and community residents.   

    

JOB DESCRIPTION  

Programming/Organizational: 

  • Draft proposals for, organize, and administer visits by international delegations throughout the year. As a member of Global Ties U.S. (https://www.globaltiesus.org/), CIVIC is one of approximately 90 organizations across the country that collaborates with the U.S. Department of State and other agencies to host current & emerging international leaders who work in both public and private sectors. Programming includes in-person and virtual meetings between visitors and their professional peers, planning Iowa Table dinners in volunteers’ homes, and sharing the rich culture of our community. 

  • Build networks and develop relationships with community resources to expand range of program offerings, elevate visibility, and engage new and diverse members 

  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor volunteer and paid University of Iowa student interns and staff to assist with programming, membership, communications, and fundraising  

  • Coordinate CIVIC events (e.g., Annual Membership Meeting, Celebration of Citizen Diplomacy Dinner, Citizen Diplomat training) in collaboration with the respective CIVIC Board committee  

  • Facilitate and execute organizational development, including fundraising, outreach, membership, and new initiatives in close cooperation with the respective CIVIC Board committees 

  • Manage the day-to-day operations in accordance with established policies and procedures, as well as granting guidelines  

  • Report to and collaborate with the CIVIC President and Board, including preparation of monthly reports for Board meetings, and serve in an ex-officio advisory role on its committees 

 

Specific/Financial and Administrative  

  • Draft the Annual Community Partnership Grant (CPG) application and report to Global Ties US in accordance with grant guidelines 

  • Apply for grants, administer awarded grants

  • Report and communicate on CIVIC activities to membership, sponsors, and broader community (e.g., newsletters and Annual Report) 

  • Prepare annual budgets and monitor financial position vis à vis the budget (in collaboration with the Board Treasurer) 

  • Pay expenses, invoice, and deposit funds  

  • Provide monthly financial reports to the accountant and Board Treasurer  

  • Collect appropriate data required for reporting and to improve the organization’s ability to communicate outcomes  

  • Maintain required time-keeping records for all staff, and submit personnel timesheets to the Board President and/or Treasurer

 

QUALIFICATIONS  

Required 

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience 

  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and organizational skills  

  • Enthusiasm about work with people from all corners of the world 

    • International travel and foreign language experience an advantage 

    • Demonstrated international interest and knowledge an advantage 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English  

  • Proficiency in MS Office 

  • Program coordination experience   

  • Familiarity with Iowa City/Cedar Rapids community

  • Commitment to prioritizing diversification, expansion, and innovation

    • Professional experience in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work an additional benefit  

 

Desired 

  • Non-profit management, administrative and/or organizational development experience

  • Staff and/or volunteer supervision experience 

  • Budgeting, simple accounting, fundraising, grant writing experience 

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The Executive Director position is part-time at $20 per hour. The current average workload is 20 hours/week with an expectation to increase to 30 hours/week in 2022 with anticipated expanded programming. Compensation includes one week paid vacation but does not include health insurance.
