Janice Weiner, Executive Director
Janice practiced law before joining the U.S. State Department in 1987. Her postings included East Berlin, Turkey, Belgium, Poland, Canada, Mexico, as Consul General in Düsseldorf, Germany, and liaison to Capitol Hill. After retirement, she worked for the American Foreign Service Association before moving home to Iowa. She speaks a number of foreign languages and, while in the Foreign Service, nominated many contacts for IVLPs.
In the Foreign Service, Janice forged relationships across the political spectrum, with all walks of life, listening and analyzing, taking all points of view into consideration. She dealt with NGOs, multiple levels of government, businesses, academics and journalists alike.
Janice is a newly-elected at-large member of Iowa City City Council. Until December 2019, she served on the board of Shelter House. She continues to serve on the boards of Agudas Achim Synagogue, UNA/UNA Johnson County, and the Johnson County Democrats. She plays with the Community Band and sings with the “Heartbeats” Hospice Singers. She has two grown daughters and is her young granddaughter’s guardian
Grace Bryant, Program Coordinator
Grace Bryant is a third-year undergraduate student at the University of Iowa, majoring in International Relations with a certificate in Sustainability and minors in Spanish and French. She is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has spent time living in Paraguay and Spain. Grace enjoys traveling, cooking, talking politics, spending time with family, and playing tennis in her free time. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career with the State Department.
Emilie Wilson, Communications Coordinator
Emilie is a third-year undergraduate at the University of Iowa. She is majoring in Journalism & Mass Communication and Communication Studies and minoring in Psychology. In her free time, Emilie enjoys reading, writing, cooking, spending time with friends, and trying new things. Her favorite part about working for CIVIC is having the opportunity to tell the organizations story through their quarterly newsletter, The Citizen Diplomat. After graduation Emilie plans on pursuing a career in Public Relations which encompasses her interests in writing, digital marketing, and graphic design.
Holly Harris, Program Intern
Holly Harris is a second year undergraduate at the University of Iowa studying International Studies with minors in Portuguese and Spanish. After spending an exchange year in Brazil, she is interested in learning about diverse cultures, new languages, and making connections around the world. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors and is a member of the Gymnastics Club at Iowa. She hopes to pursue an international career after graduation.
Tess Knickerbocker, Communications Intern
Tess Knickerbocker is a third year undergraduate student at the University of Iowa studying Political Science and Journalism with a Spanish minor. She enjoys traveling, being outdoors, and watching and playing sports. She plans to study abroad in Spain. She hopes to have an international career after graduation and possibly attend law school in the future.
